Herbert von Karajan’s first performance with the Berliner Philharmoniker in April 1938 was a sensation – and aroused the jealousy of principal conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler, who from then on considered the young star his rival. Furtwängler died in 1954, and the direction of an America tour the year thereafter that had already been planned devolved to Karajan. After successful completion of the tour, Karajan was appointed principal conductor in 1956. Under Herbert von Karajan the Berliner Philharmoniker developed their very own performance culture, characterised by a beauty of sound, enchanting legati, virtuosity and perfection. He preferred to concentrate on the classical-romantic repertoire: Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Wagner and Strauss.

Conductor: Herbert Von Karajan) (1987) by Richard Wagner. This album has an average beat per minute of 84 BPM (slowest/fastest tempos: 72/96 BPM). Tracklist Preludes & Overtures (Berliner Philharmoniker feat. conductor: Herbert von Karajan). Die Meistersinger Von Nürnberg: Overture.

Herbert von Karajan directed the film, the sets and costumes were by Georges Wakhevitch and Jean Forrester, deliberately mimicking Gunter Schneider-Siemssen´s sets for Karajan´s previous Salzburg production. By the time the Rheingold film was completed in 1978, Unitel had aborted the plan of filming the entire Ring Cycle, a decision Herbert von Karajan no doubt was in agreement with as he had more than enough money to sponsor the completion of the project had he wished to do so. Richard Wagner - Das Rheingold (Herbert von Karajan) (1973/78) Rheingold. Staging: Herbert von Karajan. Cast: Thomas Stewart (Wotan), Peter Schreier (Loge), Brigitte Fassbaender (Fricka), Zoltan Kelemen (Alberich), Gerhard Stolze (Mime), Jeannine Altmeyer (Freia). Conductor: Herbert von Karajan with the Berlin Philharmonics. Thanks to the original uploader.

Herbert von Karajan was one of the most highly regarded Wagner conductors of his age, celebrated for a lyrical, fiery and contrapuntally clear approach to the music which owed more to the example of conductors such as Toscanini and Clemens Krauss than it did to the old German school of Wagner conducting. Karajan once remarked: When we did the Ring people said it was ‘chamber music’, but I would deny that. The orchestra engaged by Karajan was the Berliner Philharmoniker, the ensemble he considered best suited to the realisation of his musical vision. In 1973 he revived Das Rheingold with a view to filming the complete Salzburg Ring. The American lyric baritone Thomas Stewart sang Wotan, Brigitte Fassbaender joined the cast as Fricka, and Gerhard Stolze, Loge in the original 1968 production, reverted to Mime. The new Loge was Peter Schreier, a singer rarely heard in Wagner.
