From the Beginning is the first compilation album by the English rock band Small Faces. It was released by Decca Records of group material after the band had left the record label; it consisted of the band's Decca hit singles combined with various unreleased recordings. The album rose to Number 17 in the UK Album Chart. The album was released by Don Arden on Decca after the group had made a switch to the Immediate label headed by Andrew Loog Oldham.

Small Faces is a series of moments that are brilliant. The ultimate 'mod' band that could have taken over the world, but somehow kept missing the bus, train, or boat to the journey to conquer the world. Small Faces were the perfect combo - a great lead singer, with excellent support from the other three, and all were small in height. The foundation to their sound is dynamic R n' B but done in garage style fashion. Their songs were not art statements, but an excellent observation of the world around them  . From The Beginning" is a fantastic album. It grooves from side one to the end of side two Totally Mod-tastic.

From the Beginning was released between the Small Faces’ first (1966, Decca) and second (1967, Immediate) proper albums, both of which were eponymous. Though it rounds up almost all their prior chart successes, From the Beginning (Decca, also 1967) is not a greatest hits as such, for it also includes previously unissued material scraped from the bottom of the session barrel. Though their explosive entrée What’cha Gonna Do About It and signature song Sha-La-La-La-Lee had featured on their first album, the first-time collation of other hits like the joyous Hey Girl and the anguished All or Nothing was, pre-internet, rather handy. Said songs displayed the developing songwriting partnership of Marriott and bassist Ronnie Lane, further in evidence on high quality newies like My Way of Giving.

On Small Faces’ ‘I’m Only Dreaming’, which plays with soft/loud dynamics to great effect before finishing with a flourish of sax and soul shouting, the band put the two styles together. Overall, a slightly fuller, cleaner sound and the inclusion of ‘Itchycoo Park’, the band’s most memorable composition, makes Immediate’s Small Faces the slightly stronger album, but each is thoroughly enjoyable and totally of a piece with the other. The album plays like a response to Sgt. Pepper’s revolutionary sound. The tone is set from the beginning with a spacey instrumental opener, while the music hall-influenced ‘Rene’ and ‘Lazy Sunday’ sit comfortably next to the hard rocking ‘Afterglow of Your Love’ and ‘Song of a Baker’. The b-side is loosely based around the fantastical story of a boy named Happiness Stan, who sets out to find the missing half of the moon, on an Alice in Wonderland-like psychedelic trip.
