Roland "Rollie" Pemberton, better known by his stage name Cadence Weapon, is a Canadian rapper. He subsequently signed with the American record label ANTI-, releasing the albums Afterparty Babies in 2008 and Hope in Dirt City in 2012. In 2009, Cadence Weapon was named Edmonton's Poet Laureate. His first book Magnetic Days was published by Metatron in 2014.
On Cadence Weapon's pair of 2005 releases, the mixtape Cadence Weapon Is the Black Hand and the album Breaking Kayfabe, it was thrilling to watch (former Pitchfork writer) Rollie Pemberton assemble his hip-hop bricolage in plain view. The sparse Canadian rap canon afforded him plenty of room to maneuver, and he used it to execute acrobatic feats of self-invention. If the satisfying Afterparty Babies doesn't have the same thunderclap impact of its predecessors, it's because that element of adventure is subdued. This record has a clearer idea of what it wants to be, with seams neatly tucked away under a monolithic style. Pemberton's knack for massaging startling sounds into hyperkinetic dance tracks flares up periodically: "Do I Miss My Friends?" is built upon a Hanson-baiting a capella "mmm-bop. More often, he sticks to a reliable blend of techno and vintage electro.
Cadence Weapon, Afterparty Babies. Hip-hop's sacred dictum, "keep it real", is easier to follow if you're a former crack dealer from Baltimore than an erstwhile journalist and techno fan from Alberta, Canada, but Rollie "Cadence Weapon" Pemberton's second album owes much of its charm to his confidence to be exactly who he is. Inspired by a summer hanging out in Edmonton, Afterparty Babies examines heartbreak, parties and try-hard hipsters to a frantic soundtrack of unpredictable techno collages that could slot into a DJ set by Basement Jaxx or Justice.
On Cadence Weapon’s second album, Afterparty Babies, the 22-year-old Canadian rapper and producer (born Rollie Pemberton) mixes sharp, smart lyrics with nimble dance tracks. His vocals sound half-submerged amidst the pounding beats, like someone shouting over the din of a raging party. On Do I Miss My Friends? he raps over a beat built solely from Bobby McFerrin-like vocal percussion.
Cadence Weapon – Afterparty Babies. Label: Big Dada Recordings – BDCD115. This album is dedicated to my sister Gena. Thanks for teaching me how to dance (and me interpreting it as moving side to side a lot). This album is directly inspired by stuff said to me by Alex Hueghes, Jen Kenny, and Julian Wilding. This album (like much of 2006) is mostly about Stephanie. Sorry about everything. I wanted to be artistic and not thank any more people but I think that maybe I should
Freshly signed to the Anti- label, Edmonton rapper Cadence Weapon (or Rollie Pemberton) continues - with his flat intonation and half-mocking confidence - to help redefine the boundaries of modern hip-hop, something he began on his very excellent debut. But while Breaking Kayfabe was all heavy beats and grime, Afterparty Babies turns more to the fringes of house and tech-house, even going so far as to title a song "House Music
The boring beats and throwback rhyme flow (circa 92)-which is weak even by Edmontonian standards-put Afterparty Babies somewhere beneath Don Cash’s home demos and the outtakes from Organized Rhyme’s Huh? Stiffenin’ Against The Wall.
Afterparty Babies is the second album by Canadian rapper Cadence Weapon, released on March 4, 2008 by Anti-Records and Upper Class Recordings in the United States and Canada and March 10, 2008 by Big Dada in the United Kingdom. After signing with . label Anti- and the re-release of his debut album Breaking Kayfabe, he spent eleven months. in his hometown of Edmonton to work on new material for his next record.

While I generally love 80's music in general, the specific style used on this album has fallen out of favor with me. It's been a while since I listened to it, I only have the one line summary I left with the CD: "lame except tracks 12,14". So I listened to it a little more today. Cadence Weapon has put out another excellent CD. At first listen some songs will stick out as a good listen and others might not. But as the case with a lot of good music a couple of spins leads to an increased appreciation of all the songs on the album.
