João Gilberto is a bossa nova album by João Gilberto, originally released in Brazil as a vinyl LP in 1973 and reissued on CD in 1988. João Gilberto released another album named João Gilberto in 1961, as well as several EPs with only his name as title. The minimal instrumentation – just Gilberto's guitar and voice, plus Sonny Carr's very sparse percussion – and the relentless beat give the album a hypnotic feel. The album's sound engineer was famous electronic music pioneer Wendy Carlos

The eminence grise of bossa nova steps halfway out of the shadows in a performance that, as always, adds new depth to the word reflective. Guitar of perfect simplicity backs vocals at once provisional-seeming and definitive. The songs themselves mix standards like "Aquarela do Brasil" and "Garota de Ipanema" with less familiar songs.

Like Thelonious Monk, like Erroll Garner, Joao Gilberto has done little to change his style over the course of his musical life. He still plays with tremendous focus and ability. And, like Basie's American swing or Django's European swing, he has his own swing which is purely Brazilian and purely Gilberto. And he still prefers to be his own band, dropping even the spare drums he had in the 60s and 70s. The Montreux show is outstanding

João Gilberto Prado Pereira de Oliveira, known as João Gilberto ( Portuguese pronunciation: ; June 10, 1931), is a Brazilian singer and guitarist. João Gilberto, aka the "White Album" (1973), featured hypnotic minimalist execution, limited to the singer, his guitar, and Sonny Carr on drums. 1976 saw the release of The Best of Two Worlds, a reunion with Stan Getz, featuring singer Miúcha, (sister of Chico Buarque), who had become Gilberto's second wife in April 1965. Evenly interspersed with these studio recordings have been the live recordings Live in Montreux; João Gilberto Prado Pereira de Oliveira; Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar; Live at Umbria Jazz; and Live in Tokyo.

On João, Gilberto sings with the abstracted air of someone absorbed in a mundane task, as if he isn't even aware that other people can hear him. Accompanied by his own acoustic guitar and a small combo led by jazz Clare Fischer, Gilberto uses this 1991 release to reach across generations of Brazilian tunesmiths, from original samba performers like Noel Rosa to Tropicália star Caetano Veloso. A haunting take on Cole Porter's "You Do Something to Me" rounds out the intimate, endearing set. João João Gilberto.

In 1976 came the release of The Best of Two Worlds, a reunion with Stan Getz, featuring singer Miúcha, (sister of Chico Buarque), who had become Gilberto's second wife in April 1965. While all of Gilberto's albums since Getz/Gilberto have been released on CD, the first three domestic albums were released in 1988 by EMI on a single CD entitled The Legendary João Gilberto: The Original Bossa Nova Recordings (1958–1961).
