Given this, the restraint shown by Driftmachine on Colliding Contours – their second full length for Umor Rex – is refreshing. The Berlin-based duo of Andreas Gerth and Florian Zimmer are emphatic in their embrace of the platform, but bypass sprawling freakouts in favour of tracks built around terse rhythmic figures, dubwise bass and buried drones, overlaid with snatches of noise and glacial drift. From there on in, Driftmachine take a more conventional, though no less enjoyable tack. The beatless ‘Sans Soleil’ is built largely on a single drone, occasionally interspersed with the visceral crackle of loose, malfunctioning electronics; an android cohort snapping ominously to life. Observant Sirens remains similarly mechanical, even when utilising the kind of hollow, organic percussion redolent of Shackleton or Muslimgauze.
Driftmachine – Colliding Contours. More specifically, the majority of their artists, including Driftmachine, have a penchant for the genreless, and this is heard loudly on Colliding Contours.

It's all held together by tense grooves and a post-club, eerie electronic atmosphere.
Go deep into the elegant menace of their sound through the unpredictability of modular synthesis. The album opens with Radiations, a crawling piece with a slow rebound of electronic shocks fractioning into echoes and reverberations which could be heard as an initial dialogue between operator and machine (an idea Driftmachine formerly explored in their Eis Heauton EP. Sans Soleil, the second cut, introduces the perpetual motion sound sculptures that will be prevalent throughout the rest of the album.
Florian Zimmer and Andreas Gerth have a new album of dubbed out sonics ready for release. Already this year the spool-fancying outfit has released albums from Good Willsmith, SR Hess & RM Zuydervelt, M. Geddes Gengras and a split tape from Shapes and Melfi. It can be hard to keep up with the wealth of lesser known talents and cult favourites that make their way on to the label, but anyone who has been following them with interest will likely remember Driftmachine
