Airborne is the sixth studio album by Curved Air and was recorded in 1976. Like their last few releases, it was not a significant commercial success. After a follow-up non-album single, "Baby Please Don't Go" b/w "Broken Lady", the group disbanded. Drummer Stewart Copeland went on to form The Police, while violinist Darryl Way and lead singer Sonja Kristina both pursued solo careers. Bassist Reeves and guitarist Jacques both later became members of the semi-pro band Big Chief.

Second Album was the second album released by British rock group Curved Air. It reached No. 11 in the UK Charts on 9 October 1971, and "Back Street Luv" became a UK No. 4 chart hit on 7 August 1971. Both variations of the album cover include a rainbow, a reference to the album A Rainbow in Curved Air, from which the band took their name.

Curved Air are a pioneering English progressive rock group formed in 1970 by musicians from mixed artistic backgrounds, including classical, folk, and electronic sound. The resulting sound of the band was a mixture of progressive rock, folk rock, and fusion with classical elements. Along with High Tide and East of Eden, Curved Air were one of the first rock bands after It's a Beautiful Day, The Flock and the United States of America to feature a violin

Airborne was the final studio album that Curved Air released in the 1970's, and until last year's return with North Star almost 40 years later it was their latest. I have long been familiar with the band's first four albums, but I hadn't dug any deeper into their discography until recently. Airborne is an album very much of its time, a time as we all know that saw the first wave of progressive Rock in a gradual decline. There was an almost universal move in the genre towards more streamlined and commercial songs while still holding on to the core characteristics of classic.

The final Curved Air album before the band's late-1976 split is a somewhat under-rated effort, an album that may not be able to hold a candle to the superlative triumphs of their first three records, but still a strong summation of all that made the group so important in the first place. With founders Sonja Kristina and Darryl Way flanked by former Greenslade bassist Tony Reeves, future Police drummer Stewart Copeland, and guitarist Mick Jacques, Airborne kicks off with the delicious "Desiree" - the band's last genuine chance of restoring former chart glories - and peaks.

Just like their prior album it's different from the more early 70's prog rock stuff, but Airborne is still really impressive because the vocal melodies are written well, and the violin is a nice addition in this case. I think this was the bands last 70's album but reunited in the 90's for another one. I'm still amazed Stewart Copeland was the drummer for these guys. It's so weird because I associate him with the reggae pop of the Police (and the Spyro the Dragon soundtrack which is awesome) but a prog rock band?
