The Flamingos are a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted doo-wop group from the United States, most popular in the mid- to late 1950s and best known for their 1959 cover version of "I Only Have Eyes for You". Billboard magazine wrote: "Universally hailed as one of the finest and most influential vocal groups in pop music history, the Flamingos defined doo wop at its most elegant and sophisticated.

Flamingo Serenade also helped with the release of singles. The first song released from this album was Love Walked In, issued ahead of the album, in March 1959. This single, however, failed to chart. But the next song they tried as a single, I Only Have Eyes For You, with Nate Nelson singing the lead, hit pay dirt. The song became a big hit. It first received notice in Philadelphia, and soon spread through the Northeast.

In the late 1950s, the pop charts were infiltrated by a new wave of African‑American groups whose a cappella performances were derived not only from gospel music, but also from 1940s black vocal ensembles such as the Mills Brothers and the Ink Spots. This photograph was used on the cover of their Flamingo Serenade album. Johnson was 12 years old when he purchased his first guitar. I wanted a saxophone, he now recalls, "but when my mother took me down to the music store they didn't have a tenor sax, and I wasn't going to leave that place without an instrument.
