It's not easy to pinpoint precisely what makes Christina Pluhar and L'Arpeggiata's performances of Baroque music, particularly Monteverdi, so extraordinary and distinctive, even in a time - the early 21st century - when (pardon the oxymoron) exceptionally fine recordings of this repertoire are the rule rather than the exception.

Vespro della Beata Vergine (Vespers for the Blessed Virgin; SV 206 and 206a) – more properly in Latin Vesperæ in Festis Beatæ Mariæ Virginis, or casually Vespers of 1610 – is an extended musical composition by Claudio Monteverdi for soloists, choirs and orchestra. The liturgical vespers is an evening service, part of the Catholic Divine Office. In scale, Monteverdi's Vespers was the most ambitious work of religious music before Bach, with a duration of around 90 minutes.
