In 1984, he released Scenes In the City, his first album for Columbia Jazz, which began his thriving jazz career. He also made successful forays into the pop world with artists such as The Grateful Dead, Sting and Bruce Hornsby. Branford Marsalis won his first Grammy in 1993 for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual or Group, for his album I Heard You Twice the First Time, and another in 1994 (Best Pop Instrumental Performance for "Barcelona Mona," a single he recorded with Bruce Hornsby for the Olympics in Spain

Branford Marsalis and the members of his quartet joined the North Carolina Symphony for American Spectrum, released in February 2009 by Sweden's BIS Records. The album showcases Marsalis and the orchestra performing a range of American music by Michael Daugherty, John Williams, Ned Rorem and Christopher Rouse, while being conducted by Grant Llewellyn  . 1984 Scenes in the City (Columbia). 1986 Romances for Saxophone (CBS Masterworks). 1986 Royal Garden Blues (CBS).

Scenes In The City (1983) introduces the work of Branford Marsalis as a leader. This record should rectify that situation, for Branford Marsalis is one of the very best saxophonists of his generation. He swings aplenty; plays long, florid lines rich in melodic material and rhythmic invention, possesses a soft, warm contemporary tone that serves him well on ballads, at which he, unlike many of his colleagues, excels. In fact, each track on this album is an homage to Marsalis' influences or even his contemporaries whom he admired. More importantly he composed three of the six tracks on this album (tracks 1, 3 and 4). I could babble on, but the best way to get a sense of this album is to listen to the sound samples.
