MCA continued the series of definitive masters of the Jimi Hendrix catalogue in 2000, releasing the self-titled box set The Jimi Hendrix Experience, consisting of four discs. About All Along the Watchtower. The great Hendrix covered Bob Dylan’s sparse original for his album Electric Ladyland and gave new life to it. It’s noted for its cryptic lyrics, and this version is known for the solo before the final verse. The lyrics have been decoded for the Dylan version and can be found here. The clue might be in the title. The song progressively lifts the perspective from the intimate setting of a one-to-one conversation to the level of the watchtower where princes can see the others coming and going-even the riders approaching from the distance. Hendrix takes Dylan’s song and rewrites the music to expand and highlight the meaning of the lyrics.

Jimi Hendrix recorded a definitive cover of Bob Dylan's 'All Along the Watchtower' on January 21, 1968. Before the album's release, Jimi Hendrix obtained an acetate of the disc and fell in love with it. Less than two months after Dylan recorded it, Hendrix was in the studio recording his own take. On Jan. 21, 1968, Hendrix and the Experience settled in to make what would become the definitive reading of the song. Hendrix's arrangement of the song fit the Experience perfectly. Taking the subdued pastoral shades of the Dylan original, Hendrix turned it inside out to show "Watchtower"'s underlying vibrant colors. A simple three-chord song with an armload of brilliant lyrics meet head on with the firepower of Hendrix and band and it's pure gold. With Kramer behind the board, the recordings took shape quickly. The signature guitar sound was, apparently, easily obtained.
