Tadpoles' modern psychedelia is hard-driving and intense, swirling and visceral. Since the release of the first Tadpoles album, He Fell From the Sky, and its aptly titled follow-up Far Out, the band has developed its own distinctive sound and style. While much of the haze surrounding the production of He Fell lifted on Far Out, Smoke Ghost further refines the band's sound. Tadpoles' evolution manifests itself in clearer production with more textural variety in the arrangements and the vocals more up front than on previous efforts.

Smoke Ghost (1998) is the third full-length studio album released on CD by Tadpoles and is the first album with Tadpoles' new drummer, Adam Boyette. The song "Breaking" is a re-recording of the original version which appeared on the group's 1992 cassette-only album, Superwhip.

Judas, This Is Jesus" is a remake of the Tadpoles' track originally released on the 1989 cassette-only album, Beautiful Music For Ugly Children and was recorded and produced by Mark Kramer (Shimmy Disc) at Noise New Jersey studio.
