Pride (In the Name of Love). Pride (In The Name Of Love) U2 Cover.

It’s Weird ’90s Week on Stereogum. All week long we’re looking at the strangest musical moments and trends of the decade. Usually there would be one or two tracks by an artist you actually liked, nestled among so many more by groups you hated or maybe didn’t even know. Pre-digital, you couldn’t cherrypick a track here or there.

That rare U2 album where you reach the end and feel cheated by the lack of patented Bono yodelling. Part-recorded in the Moroccan city of Fez, No Lin. ounds as if it passed out in the heat and had to be dragged under a tree to recuperate. At once bloated and insubstantial, it bobs and weaves, adrift on endless waves of billionaire rock star ennui. It didn’t help that the record resembled a karaoke tribute to the musical heroes of their adolescence in Dublin. Mind you, few singers could deliver Elevation’s giggling chorus of I’ve lost all self-control/ Been living like a mole with the straight face Bono maintains here.
