New single from Soft Hearted Scientists. Posted on 27/06/2019. New music – a vinyl single – is coming in July from Soft Hearted Scientists. Here’s what label Fruits de Mer has to say: The Welsh ined alchemists returned to the studio earlier this year after a lengthy break to record a cover for a year-end Fruits de Mer retrospective that we’re still working on – but the result was so strong I felt it deserved a single release in its own right and the band had such a good time they decided to work. So here we have The Bee Gees’ ‘Please Read Me’, a 60s pop-psych gem from the brothers Gibb with not the faintest whiff of cheese to it is given a magical makeover, paired with an all-new SHS song, ‘Moths Mistook Us For The Moon’, that’s just lovely and has that classic Soft Hearted Scientists sound.

Last Spring The Soft Hearted Scientists’ Nathan Hall released an EP of four songs called The Volga Sturgeon Face. Now he has released a full length album, Effigies, that includes the four songs from the EP plus eight additional original tunes and a second disc of 10 demo tracks that he recorded in his home for the album. Nathan is a master of writing and performing a unique set of engaging adult nursery rhymes. His songs are full of catchy hooks with the memory lingering long after you’ve stopped the disc
When Welsh collective Soft Hearted Scientists first emerged a decade ago, they immediately won us over with their sweetly melodic, whimsical brand of folk song. As well as channelling the gently warped aesthetics of Syd Barrett and The Incredible String Band, they incorporated an element that’s often all too absent (or evident only to its creators) in most prog – humour. This reissue reminds us how their musical blueprint was established, and it remains as good an introduction as any to the band’s five albums to date. The home demo versions of the songs included on this expanded set offer a slightly fuzzier, cosier take on each track, but the fully realised nature of these songs shows that this album wasn’t the result of the stoned larking about in the studio you might lazily assume after a cursory listen. The carefully crafted set of songwriting and widescreen arrangements on Uncanny Tales From The Everyday Undergrowth were crafted by a band who already had a clear vision of the slightly wobbly, psychedelic world they wanted to create. The result is a minor classic that’s well worth rediscovering
