Son of a Preacher Man" is a song written and composed by American songwriters John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins and recorded by British singer Dusty Springfield in September 1968 for the album Dusty in Memphis. Springfield's version was produced by Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, and Arif Mardin for her first album for the Atlantic Records label and became an international hit reaching in the United States and in her native United Kingdom when it was released in late 1968

Son of a Preacher Man is the second solo studio album by American country music artist John Rich, one half of the duo Big & Rich. Rich wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the album. Originally slated for a May 2009 release on Warner Bros. Records, the same label to which Big & Rich are signed, Son of a Preacher Man was released on March 24, 2009. Shuttin' Detroit Down" was not originally planned to be included on Son of a Preacher Man. Rich co-wrote the song with fellow country singer John Anderson, and sent the song to radio in late January 2009, thus halting the chart run of "Another You". Shuttin' Detroit Down" debuted at number 34 on the country charts, giving Rich his first solo Top 40 single of his career. It reached a peak of number 12 after nine weeks on the chart. After the release of "Shuttin' Detroit Down", the album's release date was moved up to March

Son Of A Preacher Man was Dusty Springfield’s biggest hit, charting at in the US and in the UK. The song got a late boost back onto the charts in 1994, when Quentin Tarantino included it in his film Pulp Fiction. Tarantino was so attached to the song that he would have cut its scene if he couldn’t get the rights to the song. Aretha’s father was a preacher and both of my grandfathers were preachers. I said, ‘She’s the daughter of a preacher man and you might say I’m the son of a preacher man,’ and that’s how we came up with the title. It took us half an hour, maybe 45 minutes, to write the song. The main inspiration for this change in direction were Peter Allen (the singer's husband at the time) and producer Larry Marks. They were both very fond of Randy Newman, the artist who is the most prominent composer on this collection. The overall mood of this album is somewhat quirky. Some People, Liza Minnelli.
