It is to be hoped that the day of self-serving modernism is through and that these pieces, all of them fascinating, will be heard more often.

Duo Gazzana PADUA Wed, 22 May. WORLD PREMIERE of "Seven Pieces" by Valentin Silvestrov Honored by the presence of the composer himself. 23 April at 09:35 ·. open.

Natascia's wistful bowing is intensely poetic while Raffaella's sparkling cascade of notes adds a touch of intrigue. Together they express with, lucid elegance, the continuum of sentiment within the music that ranges from quiet jubilation to placid ennui. Personnel: Natascia Gazzana: violin; Raffaella Gazzana: piano. Start your music shopping from All About Jazz and you'll support us in the process. Learn how. About Duo Gazzana.

Label: ECM New Series. Duo Gazzana, who are the Italian sisters Natascia Gazzana (violin) and Raffaella Gazzana (piano), offers a selection of backward-looking works written between 1922 and 2009. The real surprise is the earliest, William Walton’s Toccata, a biting, hard-hitting take on a centuries-old style, quite out of keeping with the tenor of English music in the 1920s.

Violinist Natascia Gazzana and her sister, pianist Raffaella present their second album for ECM's New Series, uniting works from the 20th and 21st centuries with striking narrative character and retrospective glances at music history. Composers from France, Great Britain, Italy, Russia and Ukraine present earlier musical forms: toccata, suites, canons and variations, in the light of new developmental techniques, thereby revealing similarities and relations across centuries, geographical boundaries and contrasting forms of expression.
