Weasels Ripped My Flesh is the seventh studio album by the American rock band the Mothers of Invention, and the tenth overall by Frank Zappa, released in 1970. It is the second album released after the Mothers disbanded in 1969, preceded by Burnt Weeny Sandwich. In contrast to its predecessor, which almost entirely focused on studio recordings of arranged compositions, Weasels Ripped My Flesh consists of a combination of live and studio recordings and features more improvisation.

The Mothers of Invention were an American rock band from California that served as the backing musicians for Frank Zappa. Formed in 1964, their work is marked by the use of sonic experimentation, innovative album art, and elaborate live shows. Wilson nominally produced the Mothers' second album Absolutely Free (1967), which was recorded in November 1966, and later mixed in New York, although by this time Zappa was in de facto control of most facets of the production. It featured extended playing by the Mothers of Invention and focused on songs that defined Zappa's compositional style of introducing abrupt, rhythmical changes into songs that were built from diverse elements.

Compositionally, though, the music reveals itself as exceptionally strong, and Zappa's politics and satirical instinct have rarely been so focused and relevant, making We're Only in It for the Money quite probably his greatest achievement.

The Mothers of Invention were an American band active from 1966 to 1969. Throughout, their output was primarily directed by composer and guitarist, Frank Zappa (1940–1993). Their albums combined a broad span of genres and utilised diverse instrumentation. Their lyrics were generally humorous, with frequent style-parodies of contemporary Pop music (with doo-wop love ballads endlessly lampooned), bountiful surreal imagery, cartoonish vocals and oblique, satirical protest songs.

Cruising with Ruben & The Jets is the fourth Mothers of Invention album. Released at the end of 1968, the concept album was written in the style of 1950s doo-wop and classic R&B, a childhood love of Zappa’s and members of the band, including singer Ray Collins, who all came up with the idea while in the studio recording other music. It is being reissued with the original 1968 mix from the master analog tape on 180-gram vinyl.

The Mothers of Invention moved to New York City in November 1966 for a booking at a Greenwich Village club called the Balloon Farm that began on Thanksgiving Day and ran through New Year's Day, 1967. After a two-week stint in Montreal, they returned to California, where Fielder left the group in February. On August 19, the Mothers of Invention gave their final performance in their original form, playing on Canadian TV at the end of a tour. One week later, Zappa announced that he was breaking up the band, although, as it turned out, this did not mean that he would not use the name "the Mothers of Invention" for groups he led in the future. In August, Bizarre released another archival Mothers of Invention album, Weasels Ripped My Flesh, which charted.

Talk about The Mothers Of Invention - The Original Mothers Of Invention

This admitted bootleg is of such high quality, you'd be surprised it's a boot at all. I've looked around on discogs and couldn't find the same arrangement of works on any other release. Maybe I'm missing something, I don't know. But if the original Mothers is your thing (as I would dare say the majority of Zappa fans would say), then this disc largely comprising of improvisations is worth seeking out. The quality is outstanding and is a better record than the majority of posthumous Zappa Records releases.

Recorded live between October 1968 and May 1969, these tracks were chosen, produced and mastered by Frank Zappa himself at Artisan Sound in Hollywood, CA in mid-1969. FZ At Artisan includes rare live versions of tracks recorded during The Mothers’ first European tour (Autumn 1968) and at various locations around the USA (mostly in 1969, the year Zappa broke up the band for the first time). Several of these songs were eventually released on the LPs Weasels Ripped My Flesh and Burnt Weeny Sandwich.

~ from United Mutations blog, dated Dec 25, 2011.The italian B13 label is known for its bizarre and mysterious releases. B13 has released some pretty rare stuff, including some fine live jazz music: Miles Davis, Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, and more recently even two Sun Ra albums: "Live At Storyville".Most of these are limited vinyl releases. On coloured vinyl. In a clear plastic sleeve. They do look pretty neat. And here's their latest one: "FZ At Artisan", taken from a recently found demo / acetate album."Recorded live between October 1968 and May 1969, these tracks were chosen, produced and mastered by Frank Zappa himself at Artisan Sound in Hollywood, CA in mid-1969.
