Consonants Each of the two classes is subdivided into noise consonants and sonorants. The division is based on the factor of prevailing either noise or tone component in the auditory characteristic of a sound. In their turn noise consonants are divided into plosive consonants (or stops) and affricates. The fact is that Soviet phoneticians look at English affricates through the eyes of a phoneme theory, according to which a phoneme has three aspects: articulatory, acoustic and functional, the latter being the most significant one. As to British phoneticians, their primary concern is the c unity of these complexes, because their aim is limited by practical reasons of teaching English.
Occlusive noise consonants are called stops because the breath is completely stopped at some point articulation and then it is released with a slight explosion, that is why, they are also called plosives. According to the work of the vocal cords stops may be voiced and voiceless. Occlusive voiced consonants are: the English Constrictive noise consonants are called fricatives, i. e. the consonant sounds in the articulation of which the air passage is constricted and the air escapes through the narrowing with friction. The English fricatives:
Consonants are known to have voice and noise combined, while vowels are sounds consisting of voice only. From the articulatory point of view the difference is due to the work of speech organs. In case of vowels no obstruction is made. In case of consonants various obstructions are made. So consonants are characterized by so-called close articulation, that is by a complete, partial or intermittent blockage of the air-passage by an organ or organs. The closure is formed in such a way that the air-stream is blocked or hindered or otherwise gives rise to audible friction
Consonants are best of all learnt if the teacher directs the attention of the students to tactile and muscular sensations of the organs of speech. In teaching to articulate sounds, diagrams and tables are very helpful. Occluslve Noise Consonant Phonemes (Plosives)/p, b, t, d, k, g/. /P. b/. In the articulation of /p/ the vocal cords do not vibrate, therefore /p/ is voiceless, but the force of exhalation and the muscular tension is great, /p/ is fort is. II. The lips are brought together and form a complete obstruction-,, /p/ is labial, bilabial.
Noise consonantsaremade with noise prevailing over tone because of a rather narrow air passage. Noise consonants vary in the work of the vocal cords and in the force of exhalation. Voiced lenis noise consonants are: /b, d, ɡ, v, ð, z, ʒ, ʤ/. Voiceless fortis noise consonants are: /p, t, k, f, θ, s, ʃ, ʧ/. Sonorants are made with tone prevailing over noise because of a rather wide air passage. In the production of occlusive noise consonants the breath is completely stopped at some point articulation (that is why they are also called stops /ˈstɒps/) and then it is released with a slight explosion (that is why they are also called plosives /ˈpləʊsɪvz/). ts are the sounds in the production of which an incomplete obstruction is formed, that is there is the narrowing between the active organs of speech and the air escapes through the mouth /f, v, s, z, θ, ð, ʃ, ʒ, h, w, 1, r, j/.
