Bellson's album The Sacred Music of Louie Bellson and the Jazz Ballet appeared in 2006. In May 2009, Francine Bellson told The Jazz Joy and Roy syndicated radio show, "I like to call (Sacred) 'how the Master used two maestros,'" adding, "When (Ellington) did his sacred concert back in 1965 with Louie on drums, he told Louie that the sacred concerts were based on 'in-the-beginning,' the first three words of the bible. The orchestra was led by Irish trombonist Bobby Lamb and American trombonist Raymond Premru. A few years later, Rich (often called the world's greatest drummer) paid Bellson a compliment by asking him to lead his band on tour while he (Rich) was temporarily disabled by a back injury  . 1978 Matterhorn: Louie Bellson Drum Explosion. 1978 Sunshine Rock (Pablo). 1978 Prime Time (Concord Jazz). 1979 Dynamite (Concord Jazz).

LOUIE BELLSON is a swing, hard bop, afro-cuban jazz, bossa nova, bop big band music artist. Referred to by Leonard Feather as "one of the most phenomenal drummers in history," Louie Bellson has expressed himself on the drums since he was three years old. At 15, he pioneered the double-bass-drum set-up. His detailed sketch earned him an 'A' in his high school art class.

When Bellson performed, you could hear the early swing that was predominant when he was coming up. You could also hear the more refined swing that he and his generation perfected in the heyday of the big bands. You heard the bop that flourished in the 1940s and ’50s. You heard modern rock and funk. But you didn't hear them isolated, one after another. Those influences were all present at the same time, and they gave Bellson’s playing a remarkable depth. Born July 6, 1924 in Rock Falls, Illinois as Luigi Paulino Alfredo Francesco Antonio Balassoni, Louie Bellson grew up in a musical atmosphere. His father ran a music store in Moline, Illinois, and Louie learned to play drums and piano starting at age three, and also learned the basics of brass and string instruments during his youth. By his early teens he was giving lessons in his father's store, and he also became an accomplished tap dancer.
