Ms. Abe not only shows off her playing ability on the marimba, but her composition skills as well. Great contrasting selections, from the complex and deep nature of "Michi" to the childlike, playful "Frogs. No matter what your musical tastes, there is something on this CD for everybody. You must have this album if you're serious about Marimba music! Abe uses a 5 octave instrument; enjoy the "bottom", she uses it well. Her compositions possess both intensity and sensitivity. You'll also find that her "aggressive" approach has cracked a few bars as well.

Dream of the Cherry Blossoms.

Keiko Abe (安倍圭子), born April 18, 1937 is a Japanese composer and marimba player. She has been a primary figure in the development of the marimba, in terms of expanding both technique and repertoire. Through her collaboration with the Yamaha musical instrument company she helped developing the modern five-octave concert marimba, too. Born in Tokyo, Abe began playing the xylophone while in elementary school. She studied xylophone with Eiichi Asabuki in Tokyo.

In this marimba solo, the world of fantasy is caught in an expanse of continuously falling cherry blossoms. In the entire piece, the tone E is centrally integrated, and it must always be played (except in the last two measures) in the same tempo. The theme of the folksong is treated several times more or less in fragments and must always be played deliberately and clearly.
