Consequently, Johnny Cougar (the artist) was dropped by Mainman, but his story did not end there. John Mellencamp refused to give up, and was eventually re-signed, (this time to Riva records) although he would continue to record as John Cougar for several more years

Cougar's debut, Chestnut Street Incident, was released in 1976 in a whirlwind of hype. A competent collection of Stonesy rockers, infused with a blue-collar Bruce Springsteen/Bob Seger attitude, the album received a critical backlash because of all the hype, but it's possible to hear the roots of Cougar's heartland music within the record, if you listen closely.

Many presumed it was his first album, but the previous summer he had released Empty Sky in England. The eight-minute title track is a strong rocker and the beautiful ballad "Skyline Pigeon" remained a part of John's live repertoire for decades, but the majority of the album is simply too twee and slight. The production is thin and simply can't compare to the work that John crafted in the 1970s with the brilliant Gus Dudgeon. On his debut LP, John Mellencamp – make that Johnny Cougar – was shooting for Springsteen-style populism. But saddled with defanged teen-idol reworkings of "Oh, Pretty Woman," "Jailhouse Rock" and the Lovin' Spoonful's "Do You Believe in Magic?" he came off as little more than the pillow-lipped, popped-collar pinup he was portrayed as on the album's cover.

Learn how John Mellencamp became Johnny Cougar, John Cougar, John Cougar Mellencamp and finally John Mellencamp. Early in his career, John Mellencamp had a choice. He could either change his name and release his first album on MCA Records, or he could head back home to Seymour, Ind. Potential rock stardom or a minimum wage job for the phone company – these were the options for the young singer, not even 25 years old, when presented with the stage name of Johnny Cougar. No one’s ever called me Johnny in my life, Mellencamp complained, perhaps not knowing how to begin to address Cougar. He had been trying to gain attention from the music industry for a couple years, making routine trips to New York City.

His first album, ‘Chestnut Street Incident’, a collection of covers, was released under his new stage name in 1976. The album was a failure. After struggling for the next couple of years, he got his first big hit in 1979 with the song ‘I Need A Lover’ that was featured in his album ‘John Cougar’. The album also had the tracks ‘Miami’ and ‘Small Paradise’. The year 1982 was a great one for him-his album ‘American Fool’ became his breakthrough. It peaked at N. on the Billboard 200 chart and became the best-selling album of that year. It had the singles ‘Diane & Jack’ and ‘Hurts So Good’
