Fernando Pessoa (b. June 13, 1888 in Lisbon, Portugal - d. November 30, 1935) was a Portuguese poet, writer, a literary critic and translator. He was bilingual in Portuguese and English, and fluent in French. In writing he would adopt countless heteronyms, all these posessed distinct biographies, temperaments, philosophies, appearances and writing styles. Best know is his work The Book Of Disquietude.

About Fernando Pessoa. He also wrote in and translated from English and French. Pessoa was a prolific writer, and not only under his own name, for he dreamed up approximately seventy-five others. He did not call them pseudonyms because he felt that did not capture their true independent intellectual life and instead called them heteronyms.

Fernando Pessoa, considered one of the greatest European poets of the 20th century, was born in Lisbon on June 13th, 1888. When he was eight years old, he moved to South Africa with his mother to join his stepfather. He returned to Portugal in 1905, living in different parts of Lisbon, from Chiado to Baixa and Campo de Ourique, for the rest of his life.

Poet Fernando António Nogueira Pêssoa was born in Lisbon, Portugal. His father died when Pessoa was five years old, and the family moved with his mother’s new husband, a consul, to Durban, South Africa, where Pessoa attended an English school. At thirteen Pessoa returned to Portugal for a year-long visit, and returned there permanently in 1905.
