I love the opportunity to flex my thespian muscle," Merchant quips on it.
Ophelia was a tempest cyclone A goddamn hurricane Your common sense, your best defense Lay wasted and in vain. For Ophelia'd know your every woe And every pain you'd ever had She'd sympathize and dry your eyes And help you to forget Help you to forget And help you to forget. Ophelia's mind went wandering You'd wonder where she'd gone Through secret doors down corridors She wanders them alone All alone.

Album: Ophelia (1998). Get the Sheet Music License This Song. songfacts ®. Artistfacts ®. Ophelia is a tragic character from Shakespeare's Hamlet who loses her mind when she's rejected by the title prince, who also killed her father. Merchant's song envisions Ophelia living varied lives throughout history as a Spanish nun, a German athlete, a sultry French star, a Depression-era American activist, a Vegas gambler's Italian mistress, and a Russian circus performer. In the end, they appear to be delusions from a mental patient (the real Ophelia). Ophelia's mind went wandering You'd wonder where she'd gone Through secret doors Down corridors She'd wander them alone.
Produced by Natalie Merchant.
Initially, the album appears to be conceptual, tracing the Ophelia character through modern times. That concept quickly falls away, leaving studied, if somewhat elliptical, lyrical portraits. Like Tigerlily, the songs on Ophelia have hushed, layered arrangements that are outgrowths, not replicas, of 10,000's jangly folk-rock. However, Ophelia lacks the subtle sonic textures and graceful hooks that made Merchant's debut so charming.
