Chuck Prophet's track record of critically acclaimed albums dates back to the mid-1980s, when he was a member of Green on Red. In 2000, it looked as though his fifth solo album, The Hurting Business, might do for him what Lucinda Williams' fifth, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, did for her. But while it wasn't a big commercial breakthrough, it was an artistic one, setting a standard that Prophet's last album and this new one have more than lived up to. Like Williams, Prophet is a roots musician with a rock'n'roller barely below the surface - one with an eclectic reco.

Chuck Prophet, who had a summer hit two years ago with "Summertime Thing," will return on September 7th with his seventh solo album, Age of Miracles. When last we left our hero, the former Green on Red guitarist-one of the most underrated Telecaster players on the planet-was parsing the connections between neo-soul, twangy blues, and Dylanesque rock on 2002's No Other Love, perhaps his best solo album. On this postmodern roots plunge, he swims deeper into pastiche song structures, adding lighter strings, heavier guitar licks, and more restless romanticism.

This isn’t to say Age of Miracles is without faults. There are some forgettable tracks, such as Monkey in the Middle and the cleverly conceived but imperfectly executed You Did (Bomp Shooby Dooby Bomp), an updated take on the dubious Viscounts classic tune, Who Put the Bomp. These chinks, however, are overshadowed by the successes. Though for someone with a reputation for guitar work, Prophet gives us little display of his prowess. He instead uses an unusual panoply of slickly layered instruments (Glockenspiel, frequently impressive pedal-steel guitar courtesy of Max Butler, harpsichord, Echoplex, and Moog), relying on electronic effects to carry his clever lyrics in this unassuming success.
Prophet still bears the mark of a roots songwriter, favoring earthy instrumentation, pedal steel adornments and a sandpapery voice that can scratch deep 'neath a graveled ground; but Age of Miracles clandestinely adds some soul, funk, and even elemental hip-hop to the equation.
Chuck Prophet is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist, born June 28, 1963. A Californian, Prophet first achieved notice in the American rock group Green on Red, with whom he toured and recorded in the 1980s. He has also recorded solo records that betray his affinity for the kind of intelligent and sometimes experimental pop made by British Invasion groups. In addition, he has gained notice as a songwriter. Solomon Burke, Heart, Kim Carnes, Peter Wolf, Kim Richey and Kelly Willis have covered his compositions.
Prophet has it all: heavy guitar chops, formidable songwriting skills, and a deep, expressive voice. Prophet always uses his guitar in the service of his songs and never flashes aimlessly. Different sounds and styles sit alongside each other comfortably in Age of Miracles. You Did (Bomp Shooby Dooby Bomp)" contains both a vocal sample and a Vox Continental organ, and the doo-wop lines Prophet recites sound absolutely up to date. Just to See You Smile" is a classically constructed, radio-friendly pop tune, while both "Heavy Duty" (co-written with Dan Penn) and "Monkey in the Middle" are greasy funk.
