Various - Svenska Shakers flac album

Since that album came out there have been reissues of various Swedish groups of the era, but until 2016's Svenska Shakers there hasn't been a collection that does as fine a job of surveying the Swedish scene between 1964 and 1968. Like the subtitle says, the bands included run the gamut from R&B shakers, mod movers, freakbeat crashers, and psych-pop dreamers, each of them represented by their best tunes.

The work of Stockholm band Annaabee-Nox is featured five times on Svenska Shakers and provides us with a fascinating ride through 60s pop styles, all given their own special touch. We can in effect chart their progress over the years from 1965 to 1968. Even at the start they were becoming something other than the standard Beat band, their take on Mose Allison’s I’m Not Talking setting off with an unsettling intro straight out of the Noise Rock handbook before haring off into a fast dance with added Pop Art guitar slashes.

Los Shakers were a popular rock band in 1960s and was a part of the Uruguayan Invasion in Latin America. They were heavily influenced by the look and sound of the Beatles. In the late 1960s they would broaden and expand their musical direction before breaking up at the end of the decade. The band was formed in 1964 in Montevideo, Uruguay by brothers Hugo Fattoruso (lead guitar and keyboards) and Osvaldo Fattoruso (rhythm guitar), after watching the movie A Hard Days Night starring the Beatles.
