After catching the attention of producer Bob Porter via Charles Earland dates including Living Black!, trumpeter Gary Chandler finally earned his shot as leader with Outlook, and don't let the absence of subsequent efforts fool you - this is one of the true lost classics of jazz-funk, a Molotov cocktail lit with a burning joint. Cut with an all-star supporting cast including guitarist Cornell Dupree, organist Ceasar Frazier, tenorist Harold Ousley, and drummer Idris Muhammad, the record is less a collection of songs than one long, steamroller groove

Gary Chandler (born in 1938) started playing professionally in 1960 in the thriving Columbus Ohio club scene with Hank Marr, Don Patterson and Benny Maupin. He worked in the Motown Revue from 1965-67 and led his own group for over a year. Over the following years Chandler joined joined the bands of Lou Donaldson & Charles Earland where he remained until the recording of his debut album. Producer Bob Porter, who decided it was time for the skilled trumpeter to make a record in his own right, provided him with an all-star line up of musicians to collaborate on the album.

This album song ideas and sophisticated arrangements, generates more creativity and excitement than anyone had ever imagined. Hardly anyone ever listening to The Mighty Ryeders live or on record will ever be deprived of a beautiful musical and entertaining experience. Gary Chandler - Blue Dues. Both Bill Mason and Gary Chandler were working with two of the most prestigious group leaders of the day: Rusty Bryant and Lou Donaldson. Originally hailing from Columbus, Ohio, where he was born in July 1948, Bill Mason, the son of a Baptist minister, had first learnt music in church. Starting out on piano he switched to organ in his late teens. Chandler, by no small coincidence, had been playing around Columbus, where he had ended up after leaving the United States Air Force in 1963. A full ten years older than Mason, he had played with many of the names on what appears to have been a thriving Ohio club scene, including Don Patterson, Hank Marr and Benny Maupin. This led to him joining the Motown Revue and eventually in joining Lou Donaldson's group where he remained (at least) until the recording of his debut album.
