Jim Shaw unleashes his inner freak for first major East Coast career retrospective. Known as a Los Angeles artist, Shaw is currently the subject of a comprehensive retrospective for the first time in New York; The End is Here at the New Museum takes axe to his oeuvre and lets the surreal, macabre goop run everywhere. Spooky echoes from the frightening imaginary episodes of childhood resound throughout Shaw’s work, especially in projects such as the Hall of Mirrors-influenced Distorted Faces series and the covers of fictional magazine Monsters of Filmland.

Since the 1970s, Jim Shaw has mined the detritus of American culture, finding inspiration for his artworks in comic books, pulp novels, rock albums, protest posters, thrift store paintings and advertisements. Download CV. The practice of American artist Jim Shaw (b. 1952, Midland, Michigan) spans a wide range of artistic media and visual imagery. Providing a blend of the personal, the commonplace and the uncanny, Shaw’s works frequently place in dialogue images of friends and family members with world events, pop culture and alternate realities.

Jim Shaw’s imagination in The End Is Here occupies floors 2–4 of the New Museum. Through his theatrical backdrops, paintings, drawings, thrift store collectibles, sculptures, and even a film depicting the religion he invented called O-Ism, Shaw clearly shows a mastery of style, which is lovable and charming, yet grotesque and smutty. Perhaps most impressive is Shaw’s ability to not only work within many mediums, but also within vastly different scales - he has remarkable skill in producing an evocative 6 6 pornographic drawing, and also in a 30 20 foot magical and fantastic tapestry.

On Wednesday, Oct. 7, when Jim Shaw: The End Is Here opens at the New Museum, one of the oddest careers in post-Pop, post-Conceptual, latter-day Surrealist art will finally receive a comprehensive museum exhibition in New York. The least known of a Los Angeles triumvirate, along with Paul McCarthy and Mike Kelley, Mr. Shaw has used an implicitly hallucinatory imagination, chameleon drawing skills and a morbid fascination with the detritus of popular culture to construct a daunting view of the nation’s psyche.

Art, Contemporary art. Jim Shaw: The End Is Here. This long overdue East Coast survey, Shaw’s first in a New York museum, should go a long way in introducing his work to audiences outside of Los Angeles.

Chorus) It's very clear Our love is here To stay ; Not for a year But ever and a day The radio and the telephone And the movies that we know May just be passing fancies And in time may go! But, oh my dear Our love is here to stay Together we're Going a long, long way In time the Rockies may crumble Gibraltar may tumble There're only made of clay But our love is here to stay.
