Queen’s tension between the ever-present past and the actual present provides the key to the problems around the making of the new Bohemian Rhapsody, positioned as a fictionalized film about Queen’s history but largely understood as a Mercury biopic. After being cast as Mercury, Sacha Baron Cohen pulled out of the project following three years of development. He claimed that the surviving Queen members wished to sanitize an often-lurid story and that the plan called for the singer to die mid-movie, so the film would become a portrait of a band that carries on from strength to strength. Queen denied Cohen’s contention, but the anecdote crystallizes the inherent problem with the band after Mercury, anyway: They’re still trading on the glories they achieved with the late singer, forever living in his shadow.

The LP sold 59,000 units last week, securing the band’s biggest impact since 1980’s The Game – which included the hits Another One Bites the Dust and Crazy Little Thing Called Love – spent five weeks at No. 1. In addition, their Greatest Hits I II & III: The Platinum Collection jumped from No. 194 to No. 9, marking the first time Queen. The soundtrack album includes a number of classic tracks featuring in the movie, along with audio from Queen’s triumphant appearance at Live Aid in 1985, which had never been released before.
