Scotland Yard (officially New Scotland Yard) is a metonym for the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), the territorial police force responsible for policing all but the inner core of London. The name derives from the location of the original Metropolitan Police headquarters at 4 Whitehall Place, which had a rear entrance on a street called Great Scotland Yard.

Scotland Yard: Scotland Yard, the headquarters of the London Metropolitan Police and a name often used to denote that force. When Scotland Yard stationed its first plainclothes police agents on duty in 1842, there was a public outcry against these spies, but the police force gradually won the trust of the London public by the time Scotland Yard set up its Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in 1878. The CID initially was a small force of plainclothes detectives who gathered information on criminal activities.
