Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, . 44/2, is the second in a set of 19 Hungarian Rhapsodies by composer Franz Liszt, and is by far the most famous of the set. Few other piano solos have achieved such widespread popularity, offering the pianist the opportunity to reveal exceptional skill as a virtuoso, while providing the listener with an immediate and irresistible musical appeal. It is considered one of the most technically demanding works in the solo piano repertoire.
Like all of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies, this is divided into two sections: a slow, contemplative, dramatic lassan and a faster, showier ending called the friska. Unlike most of the other Hungarian Rhapsodies, this one invites the pianist to insert his or her own cadenza (brilliant passage to highlight the player’s technical ability) into the music, though most pianists decline the invitation. The music is famous through having been used in numerous cartoons, where it’s been played by Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, and Woody Woodpecker

The Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 opens in a dark and dramatic mood with strong low chords. Dotted rhythms of alternating short and long notes borrowed straight from Hungarian folk dances become prominent. These slow opening pages gradually lead to brisk and energetic ones, just as folk dances may pick up the pace with time. In this aspect, the rhapsody bears a particular resemblance to the Hungarian dance known as the czárdás.
