Hawks was a power pop group based in the Fort Dodge, Iowa, area from 1979 to 1982. The band consisted of Dave Hearn (keyboards, vocals), Larry Adams (drums), Frank Wiewel (bass, lead vocals), Kirk Kaufman (guitar, vocals) and Dave Steen (guitar, vocals). They released two albums on Columbia Records - Hawks (rel. 3/81, NJC 36922) and 30 Seconds Over Otho (rel. 7/82, ARC 38058) − while they were together

Four of the five members wrote and sang great pop tunes that could have had wider appeal if this album had just received some airplay. The problem was that they were too commercial for the pop/new wave crowd and too pop/new wave for the rock crowd. Their sound recalled such British influences as Badfinger and American contemporaries like Cheap Trick and Todd Rundgren.

The Hawks album was produced by legendary producer. Signed to Columbia Records in 1980, the HAWKS soared in the early 80’s releasing two albums nationally. The self-titled debut album "HAWKS" was cut at West Minist’r Sound in Otho, mixed at The Record Plant in Los Angeles and released in 1981. Two singles from that album charted Continue reading.
