Talk about Gravenhurst - The Prize

GawelleN
I'm a massive WARP fan and collector since the very beginning, but my musical roots are in house and techno, and hence I generally have not collected much of their more "indie-rock" output such as Maximo Park and Grizzly Bear, Gravenhurst and others.Nevertheless this RSD 2012 release piqued my interest, and although it did not turn up on the day I bought it from Bleep.com later.First of all there is the artwork, which is reminiscent of the Peter Saville Associates work for Factory Records / New Order, and Ultravox back in the 80s. Then you have lush white/grey marbled vinyl which unlike some coloured pressings (Trans Canada Highway for instance) is clean and noise-free.The A-side is a lovely sombre song which builds to an epic sweeping instrumental climax; the overall structure of the song is actually remarkably similar to "Dayvan Cowboy" on the above mentioned Boards Of Canada release. The B-side is the real treat for me however; a cover of Jeff Buckley's "Song To The Siren". I first knew this in the version by This Mortal Coil, and although the vocals here cannot match Liz Fraser's for emotional power, the composition and production here are superb, with a light, fuzzy, haunting atmosphere that I associate with the likes of Broadcast and BoC.So a very welcome addition to my collection.
