The Laughing Hyenas emerged from the ashes of two of the greatest early '80s rock bands from Detroit's Cass Corridor. Brannon was the vocalist for the hardcore band Negative Approach, an influential hardcore band. Along with bands like Minor Threat, Black Flag, the Misfits, and Touch and Go labelmates the Necros, Negative Approach helped draw the blueprints for hardcore punk. The Hyenas head to Smart Studios in June 1990 to record their third and arguably best album, Life of Crime. It would be the last album with the initial recording lineup. The previously unreleased song "Save Me Tomorrow" from the sessions appears on the Third Man Records reissue. Touring to support Hard Times brings the band to an end. John Brannon: At that point, we were kind of too deep into what we were doing to do anything else. We got into a heavy touring schedule.

The Laughing Hyenas's style didn't change much on their first three releases - they just kept improving their formula, and Life of Crime was where they reached their peak. Three years after their debut, the Laughing Hyenas had become a frighteningly tight and powerful band; Kevin Strickland's thick but agile basslines merged with Jim Kimball's skull-crushing drumming to create a rhythm section whose brute force was on a par with their musical intelligence, and Larissa Strickland's sheets of blistering guitar work built rugged melodies from sonic chaos.

The Laughing Hyenas were formed in Ann Arbor, MI, in 1985 by vocalist John Brannon, formerly of area hardcore band Negative Approach, and guitarist Larissa Strickland, who'd been playing her instrument for a scant six months and had previously been in a local group called L-Seven (not the L7 who later went on to grunge-metal fame). The two added bassist Kevin Strickland and drummer Jim Kimball, and quickly made a name for themselves on the Detroit-area scene. 1990's Life of Crime was hailed by many as the Hyenas' most fully realized album to date, but it proved to be the original lineup's last hurrah. Kimball and Kevin Strickland both departed to form the roots-punk outfit Mule with .
