Bonnie Raitt’s second LP perfected the jaw-dropping fusion of soul, jazz, and rock that would come to define her whole career. The opener, "Give It Up or Let Me Go," says it all; after a sharp, twangy blues-guitar intro, the song takes off with an ecstatic drumbeat and then, from out of nowhere, a roiling New Orleans brass section. Bonnie Raitt may have switched producers for her second album Give It Up, hiring Michael Cuscuna, but she hasn't switched her style, sticking with the thoroughly engaging blend of folk, blues, R&B, and Californian soft rock. If anything, she's strengthened her formula here, making the divisions between the genres nearly indistinguishable. Take the title track, for instance
Bonnie Raitt – Bonnie Lynn Raitt is an American blues singer-songwriter, musician, and activist. During the 1970s, Raitt released a series of roots-influenced albums which incorporated elements of blues, rock, folk, in 1989, after several years of critical acclaim but little commercial success, she had a major hit with the album Nick of Time. Raitt has received 10 Grammy Awards and she is listed as number 50 in Rolling Stones list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time and number 89 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Her second album, Give It Up, was released in 1972 to universal acclaim, though many still regard it as her best work. 1973s Takin My Time was also met critical acclaim. Raitt was beginning to receive press coverage, including a 1975 cover story for Rolling Stone.
