Mike Rutherford, who was the bass player and later the guitarist for Genesis, formed Mike + the Mechanics as a side project, using Paul Carrack and Paul Young (the one from the band Sad Café, not the solo artist). Carrack, who had a hit in 1987 with "Don't Shed a Tear," sang lead on this song. The Living Years is a Ballad released by Mike & The Mechanics in 1988. Every generation Blames the one before And all of their frustrations Come beating on your door. I know that I'm a prisoner to all my father held so dear I know that I'm a hostage, to all his hopes and fears I just wish I could have told him in the living years. So don't yield to the fortunes You sometimes see as fate It may have a new perspective On a different day And if you don't give up, and don't give in You may just be O. .I wasn't there that morning When my father passed away I didn't get to tell him All the things I had to say. I think I caught his spirit Later that same year I'm sure I heard his echo In my baby's new born tears I just wish I could have told him in the living years. The Living Years" Track Info.

The Living Years" is probably the best Mike & the Mechanics album, thanks mostly to the title track. Of course, the self- titled "Living Years" is the standout, the soft rock song sung by Paul Carrack with that unforgettable choir that comes in during the chorus. When you hear Mike & the Mechanics' music, you are taken back in time when bands who spun off Genesis when Phil Collins left the group to go solo. Mike's music can be soft and light-hearted to listen too. They have a wonderful, unique sound. You'll love Mike & The Mechanics and you hope that they are still playing after 20 years somewhere.
