Lisle Ellis, (born November 17, 1951) is a Canadian jazz bassist and composer who is known for his improvisational style and use of electronics. Ellis was born in Campbell River, British Columbia. Ellis began playing electric bass in his teens and worked professionally from an early age in numerous environments including studios, radio & TV shows, and strip clubs. He was born Lyle Steve Lansall, but used his initials L. S. as his stage name Ellis; he also used the name L. Lansall-Ellis professionally.

Considered by many to be an important voice in improvised music, Ellis' twenty-five years of activity has included stints with the Cecil Taylor Quartet, Paul Bley and a long musical relationship with the late Glenn Spearman. From 1975-1979, Ellis studied in New York at the renowned Creative Music Studio (CMS). While living in Canada, he co-founded the New Orchestra Workshop (NOW) in 1978 and the Association des Musiciens Improvisaterus de Montreal in 1991. Ellis has toured and performed worldwide with many if not all of the luminaries of creative music.

Lisle Ellis is active as a musician - acoustic & electronic, visual artist, lecturer in creative process and jazz history. As a rovisor he has performed and recorded with many of the worlds foremost muscians in the field of jazz, improvised, creative and new and experimental musics. Currently living in New York City, Ellis leads his own ensemble, Audible Means, whose music reflects his interest in electronic music and its applications in improvisational contexts.
