Nord Express ‎– Central. Label: Slumberland Records ‎– Format: Vinyl, LP, Album. EX-VELOCITY GIRL guitarist Archie Moore recorded, played organ and sang on this somber and satisfying album of bass-less pop tunes from this Baltimore trio of Robert Goldrick (guitar, vocals); Ron Harrity (drums, vocals) and Trish Roy (vocals). The deep vocals on songs like "King" remind me of Calvin Johnson of BEAT HAPPENING but with an airier indie pop sensibility

Understatement is the name of the game for Nord Express, but it is not a case of being too subtle or not revealing enough in or through the music. The understatement is so consistent that it becomes the instrument of insinuation, a way in which a more textured sense of passion can be conveyed or understood at. It also threatens to tear the music apart at the seams, which nakedly shows throughout the album.

Listen to albums and songs from Nord Express. Named for the train line that once connected Paris and St. Petersburg, Nord Express formed in Baltimore as a joint effort between guitarist Robert Goldrick and drummer Ron Harrity. Their minimalist pop found the perfect label in Slumberland Records, whose roster included indie pop forerunners Black Tambourine. In fact, the band's first record, a folk-oriented self-titled EP, featured backup vocals from Black Tambourine's Pam Berry, and their follow-up LP, Central, featured contributions from Black Tambourine guitarist Archie Moore

The deep vocals on songs like "King" remind me of Calvin Johnson of BEAT HAPPENING but with an airier indie pop sensibility. Incorporating elements of slow wondering pop (LOW, BEDHEAD), "Central" has been garnering repeating listenings with its tunefulness and pleasant mix of straightforward guitars seasoned with acoustic strumming and various percussive elements adding restless touches from a broad brush of melody making.
