Earle Lavon "Von" Freeman Sr. (October 3, 1923 – August 11, 2012) was an American hard bop jazz tenor saxophonist. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Freeman as a young child was exposed to jazz. His father, George, a city policeman, was a close friend of Louis Armstrong with Armstrong living at the Freeman house when he first arrived in Chicago. Freeman's father taught him to play piano and bought him his first saxophone when he was seven

This is a meaty, visceral album full of well-worn standards that nonetheless feels immediate and relevant. Now in his eighties, Freeman - utterly unique and obviously inspired - still amazes with his mix of straight-ahead melodicism and avant-garde, sometimes off-kilter improvisation. He turns the Italian tenor perennial "Be My Love" into a sanguine and deliciously forlorn mid-tempo swinger. Similarly, Freeman's swabs of rich blue and green tones on the ballad "This Is Always" perfectly call to mind Young's languid and way-behind-the-beat late-career recordings.

When tenor saxophonist Von Freeman released his 1972 debut Doin’ It Right Now, he revealed a unique blend of influences tracing back as far as the seemingly bygone age of swing ontinued to play in an authentic, unstudied manner throughout his career, and the inspiration he derived from previous masters, Hawk and Pres in particular, is still evident on 2004’s The Great Divide, a previously CD-only release reissued now on vinyl.
