Moving Gelatine Plates is a French progressive rock band first formed in 1968 by Gérard Bertram (guitarist) and Didier Thibault (bassist and band leader), who met in 1966 as 14-year-old schoolmates. Being heavily influenced by jazz, the band is considered to be part of progressive rock's Canterbury scene despite its national origin. In particular, the band's sound has been compared to Soft Machine.
Moving Gelatine Plates biography Formed in 1968 in Sartrouville, France - Disbanded in 1972 - Reformed in 1980 as "Moving" and again in 2006. MOVING GELATINE PLATES were in retrospect one of France's finest progressive rock bands. Forming in the wake of the tumultuous political situation of France in the late 60s, their music was distinctly apolitical, filled with a refreshing sense of humor and an irreverence that distinguished them from many of their more brooding contemporaries. As it turned out, "The World of Genius Hans" stands among the finest French progressive rock albums ever released, but the promotional problems that band had experienced with the first album continued throughout the touring and promotion of the second.
Moving Gelatine Plates is the debut studio album from French act Moving Gelatine Plates. Moving Gelatine Plates is placed in the Canterbury catagory but if you ask me its hard to find what should give them a place in that catagory with this album except that they take some of their influences from the jazzy part of Soft Machines music. The music is in jazz/ rock territory. The dominant lead instrument is saxophone and the music is generally more jazz than it is rock. The debut Moving Gelatine Plates album is a decidedly worthwhile treasure for Canterbury fans to track down, not least because it hits such an absolutely perfect balance between acknowledging the band's influences and matching the quality of their work on the one hand, and creating a distinct identity for the band on the other.
This CD includes all the tracks from MGP's second album, The World Of Genius Hans, and, as a bonus, those tracks (8 to 12) from the Moving album of 1980 which weren't included on Musea's 1st MGP reissue. Tracks 1 to 7 recorded at Studio des Dames, Paris, December 7th-15th 1971. Tracks 8 to 12 recorded at Johanna Studio in 1980. Matrix, Runout: DURECO 4101AR.

On their impressive 1971 debut, France's Moving Gelatine Plates create a unique brand of jazz-influenced progressive rock. Parts of the album are reminiscent of the music recorded by groups from England's Canterbury scene (. Soft Machine), but the Moving Gelatine Plates' driving rhythms and catchy thematic shifts set the band apart from their English counterparts. Drummer Gerard Pons pulls the listener along at a frantic pace on tracks like "Gelatine" and "Last Song. With help from the growling distortion provided by guitarist Gerard Bertram, Pons keeps.
