Reggie and the Full Effect is an American rock band, the solo project of James Dewees, keyboardist for The Get Up Kids. It has released seven full-length albums, the latest in 2018, and has toured with various associated acts in their promotion. In the mid-1990s when he was playing with Coalesce, Dewees recorded four songs on a cassette tape as a joke, and would hand them out at concerts. After Matt Pryor received one, he urged Dewees to contact Ed Rose to record the material.

Get Up Kids keyboardist James Dewees' seventh go-round under the Reggie and the Full Effect moniker, 41 delivers another sugary blast of hooky, power pop-infused emo-punk that puts the fun in angst. Serious enough to stay relevant to the genre, but administered with the guarded aloofness of a lifelong class clown - the album jacket is a parody of Adele's 21 - the 14-track set sees Dewees, My Chemical Romance guitarist Ray Toro, and drummer Jarrod Alexander processing life's myriad aches and pains via the healing power of pick slides.

This is a real Mixed Bag for Reggie and the Full Effect. There are a lot of tunes on here that are easily some of the catchiest and most well written Reggie tracks I've heard in years. But there are just as many moments of failed comedy and sappy nonsense going on here as well. It's not nearly as consistent, and the production is off in a few parts. But this album thankfully shows that James Dewees does have enough left in the tank for some more great music in the future.

For those who don't know what or who Reggie and The Full Effect is, this bonkers/therapeutic "side project" of the t, pop-punk troubadour James Dewees is always full of surprises and a different take on modern pop music. Even though Dewees started the project as a fun thing to do between tour and album cycles, it turned into a legit piece of art. (It is safe to call this art, right? Yeah, yeah its art)
