Chill Out is the third studio album by The KLF, released in February 1990 and one of the earliest ambient house concept albums. The music describes a mythical night-time journey to the . Gulf Coast states beginning in Texas and ending in Louisiana. Chill Out was conceived as a continuous piece of music, with original KLF music interwoven with samples from songs by Elvis Presley, Fleetwood Mac, Acker Bilk, Van Halen, 808 State and field recordings of Tuvan throat singers.

this was the chill out album in 91. good friends, good raves, good memories. thanks klm. 4 months ago. I wish I had some weed. If you cannot and will not begin to understand any of this then you may have already fallen victim.

Their ‘Chill Out’ album in 1990 was no different in the way it redefined and reshaped music, albeit in a quieter and more subtle way. Apparently recorded in one live take ( We’d get near the end and make a mistake, so we’d have to go all the way back to the beginning and set it all up again, Cauty told Record Collector in 1991) they laid down an artistic blueprint that has formed a source of inspiration and imitation for many since. The year after the release of ‘Chill Out’, the KLF were the biggest selling singles act in the world and the following year they announced their retirement from the music industry. With Drummond and Cauty both now immersed in the art world, the KLF’s musical legacy may have been deleted at their own request but, above and beyond the heavily marketed chill out explosion of a few years ago, today’s down-tempo scene would be markedly different without it.

Chill Out is the seminal ambient house album that was the brainchild of former Timelords and Justified Ancients of Mu Mu, Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty. The KLF didn’t do too well on the charts but ended up becoming the world’s biggest selling singles act the following year. They didn’t do bad as The Timelords with their single Doctorin’ the Tardis either.

Such a unique album to come out in 1990. Very forward-thinking. However, it's not an album one could get obsessed with. It's one of those albums that earns the praise it gets by it's impressiveness, not by how much the listeners connect with it. In my opinion. Or consider a donation?

Notes

Recorded live at Trancentral.

The sleeve notes show "sections", with the start and finish times (rather than tracks with duration), since this is actually a continuous 1-track CD, 44 mins 43 secs in length.

The title of track 1.2 has an extra space between the words "Of" and "Ricardo".
The title of track 1.9 contains a spelling error; the correct spelling is 'Wichita', not 'Witchita'

Talk about The KLF - Chill Out

Hallolan
It's pretty sad but I have to admit that almost every copy out there nowadays is suffering from severe disc rot, thanks to darned PDO. Those who are unaware of disc rot issue associated with manufacturing fault at PDO factory can find all info at wikipedia or elsewhere. Others are advised to be extremely cautious purchasing any cd pressed by PDO, including this gem. Better go for waxtrax US release.

I have a perfect copy of the original JAMS CD5 release (all one track). No bronzing and no disc rot. Owned it since brand new. Plays beautifully. I have Swiss and UK CDs of Shag Times and the UK disc although bronzed plays perfectly - as does the unbronzed Swiss made KLF Comms CD. My Kylie Said To Jason CD single is also bronzing slightly but plays perfectly. I agree with exumer that polar_lights has not examined or played the correct original KLF Communications released copies out there and should curb his enthusiasm when condemning them out of hand on a website that is a marketplace. Shabby and Sham!.

Your comment definitely brings some hope despite my own experience with a handful of PDO cds all suffering with a same problem with a varying consequences. So could you please confirm if you obtain a copy of Chill Out PDO pressing which is absolutely free from any signs of disc rot/bronzing even under careful inspection? Thanks in advance.

Sham comment. It's fair to say you do not own 'almost every copy out there nowadays', and also happen to be the only person I'm aware of on this site who's claiming such bronzing/ disc rot problems. PDO or not, it's best to perhaps restrict ones damaging comments to their particular sphere of knowledge rather than generalize with a tainted brush over an apparent (or not) issue on this particular pressing.
