On "Calling All Spirits, Calling All Poets," Fefer establishes a 12/8 rhythm of shifting accents on which he overdubs bass clarinet lines of harmonic movement while he plays the melody on the same instrument on the other track. Even the second track was recorded in one take, a testament to Cadence Jazz Records' intentions to make the recordings sound as natural as if they were performed in a club

Three things strike the listener immediately upon hearing this recording. The first is the big tone that Avram Fefer projects on saxophone, particularly on the opening tune, an unusual version of Mingus' "Orange Was the Color of Her Dress" in which Fefer recalls the cavernous sound of Coleman Hawkins. The second is Fefer's sense of melody. The saxophonist has little difficulty exposing himself in front of only bass and drums, a risky business to be sure, but one in which he appears comfortable, in part due to his grasp of a song's essence.

Saxophonist Avram Fefer possesses that undeniable spiritual feel for the music, to quote what was written about this extraordinary musician by the online journal All About Jazz. Always positioning himself in the sequence of the jazz tradition, Fefer is more a visionary than an experimentalist in the scientific sense. That circumstance alone means that his music is not laboratorial, but deeply ritualistic.

His debut release, Calling All Spirits, Calling All Poets(featuring Igal Foni and Eric Revis) immediately caught the jazz world's attention, garnering accolades from the press and presaging the strong musical presence to follow. His four releases with piano legend Bobby Few received critical acclaim, international radio play, and produced several successful tours. Avram Fefer - Ritual (Clean Feed, 2009) Saxophonist and composer Fefer leads a scalding trio on this disc, he plays alto, tenor and soprano saxophones as well as bass clarinet, supported by Eric Revis on bass and Chad Taylor on drums. The music is very open and free sounding, both in terms of free jazzand the free flow of ideas between musicians that are interconnected and set on a common mission. I really liked this album a lot, there was a raw and palpable sense that the musicians were reaching for something special.
