Joe "Guitar" Hughes (born Maurice Hughes, September 29, 1937 – May 20, 2003) was an American blues musician, from Houston, Texas, United States. Hughes was inspired by Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown and Johnny "Guitar" Watson – "anyone who had fire in their playing and a good shuffle". His first band was the Dukes Of Rhythm in the 1950s, which also included his friend Johnny Copeland. He worked with Little Richard and in Bobby Bland's band in the 1960s.

Joe Hughes was not as well known as his peers Albert Collins and Johnny Copeland, but he was a solid electric bluesman with a formidable discography. Another of his Houston neighbors, Johnny Guitar Watson, lit a performing fire in Hughes when he was 14. Lone Star stalwarts T-Bone Walker and Gatemouth Brown also exerted their influence on Hughes playing.

The group enjoyed a residence at Houston's Shady's Playhouse blues club throughout the 1950s and Hughes cut several singles including "Make Me Dance Little Ant" (1958) and "The Shoe Shy" (1963). Copies of these discs later found their way across the Atlantic, creating a fan base that would lead to regular European festival appearances in the years leading up to his death. By 1963 Hughes was working as a member of the Upsetters, an R&B band led by the saxophonist Grady Gaines.
