When the guitarist Manitas de Plata, who has died aged 93, became an international star in the 1960s, his was the name most widely associated with flamenco. At the time, music was classified as either popular or classical: the term world music had not been coined and the wizardry of the Gypsy from the south of France was regarded as both high culture and light entertainment. In his sleeve notes for De Plata’s debut album in 1965, the US journalist Vincent Sheean wrote that the musician had learned from the instrument everything it has to teac. e lives in his music as the fish lives in the sea. The path to worldwide acclaim was not straightforward.

Manitas de Plata (born Ricardo Baliardo; 7 August 1921 – 5 November 2014) was a flamenco guitarist born in Southern France. Despite achieving worldwide fame, he was criticized for not following certain rhythmic rules (compás) that are traditional in flamenco. Ricardo Baliardo was born in a gypsy caravan in Sète in southern France. He became famous by playing each year at the -Mer gypsy pilgrimage in Camargue, where he was recorded live by Deben Bhattacharya.

De Plata sold around 93 million records in a career that spanned over half a century. Despite acquiring a fortune as one of France's best-selling recording artists, he died practically penniless - spending his fortune on "roulette, fancy cars, going out and beautiful women," according to Bissiere. He was a character," Bissiere added. As his talent became clear, he changed to his recording name, Manitas de Plata, meaning "little hands of silver" in Spanish. He was a legendary ladies' man and De Plata himself once admitted he didn't know how many children he had fathered in his life, thought to be more than 20. The guitarist was a strong influence on the Gipsy Kings and strengthened his reputation in the . after playing New York's Carnegie Hall in the 1965. His funeral will take place on Saturday in Montpellier.

Manitas de Plata, who has died aged 93, was a flamboyant Gipsy guitarist from the Camargue who became a celebrated exponent of flamenco. His real name was Ricardo Baliardo, but it was as Manitas de Plata ( little silver hands ) that he rose to fame in the 1960s - the title of Manitas de Oro ( little golden hands ) had gone to Andres Segovia. De Plata first attracted notice playing to pilgrims at the annual -Mer Gipsy gatherings in the Camargue, and at Gipsy weddings in the La Roquette district of Arles, often accompanying his cousin, the singer José Reyes.

Manitas de Plata, Spanish for little hands of silver, was a Gypsy from the south of France, and a self-taught prodigy in his Gypsy community. De Plata was known for his deviations from traditional Flamenco metric conventions and musical structures, and his desire to play by his own rules. In 1964, Lucien Clergue, a French photographer and friend, introduced de Plata to Picasso and later asked de Plata to create the soundtrack to his documentary Pablo Picasso: War, Peace, Love. De Plata’s international career flourished after the release of his first LP, Guitarra Flamenco
