Johann Strauss II (born Johann Baptist Strauss; 25 October 1825 – 3 June 1899), also known as Johann Strauss J. the Younger, the Son (German: Sohn), son of Johann Strauss I, was an Austrian composer of light music, particularly dance music and operettas. He composed over 500 waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, and other types of dance music, as well as several operettas and a ballet.

Johann Strauss II and Josef Strauss. Most Famous Waltzes, Polkas & Marches. Overview (current section).

Johann Strauss I eventually managed to secure a place in a local orchestra leading to his joining the popular Lanner Quartet formed by his would-be rival Joseph Lanner. Together they popularised Viennese waltzes and rustic German dances. Reforming the waltz. Joseph Lanner was one of the earliest Viennese composers to reform the waltz from a simple peasant dance to something that even high society could enjoy. His Quartet expanded into a small string orchestra in 1824 and Lanner went on to be just as famous as his friend and musical rival Johann Strauss I. Going solo. Lanner placed Johann.

If one had to choose the musician who has best sung the charms of the city of Vienna, the answer would certainly not be Haydn, Mozart, Schubert or Mahler, but incontestably Strauss. The Strausses, to be more exact: there was a veritable dynasty of them, these musicians who turned their talents to making waltz the musical form that is indissolubly linked with the name of the Austrian capital. It is the dynasty of the famous King of the Waltz: Johann Strauss the father (1804-1849) and his sons Johann, the most famous (1825-1899), Josef (1827-1870) and Eduard (1835-1916); they have kept the couples of the dancing world turning since the early 19th century, and will undoubtedly do so far into the future.
Strauss music is primarily dance music; yet even more it is dream music, atmosphere music — the music of an unreal Vienna, city of waltzes. Slightly stereotyped images, no doubt, but do not the works of the Strausses date from the most brilliant and prosperous period in the history of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy? Did not the Strauss père begin his career in that calm, bourgeois era known as the 'Biedermeierzeit', and were not his three sons alive throughout the glorious reign of the Emperor Franz-Josef, when Vienna was one of the most splendid capitals in Europe?
Representing a sort of Viennese Belle époque, Strauss music may sometimes seem too brilliant, too witty, if not shallow, but fundamentally it is perfectly adapted to the setting of 19th century Vienna — an elegant, sophisticated, animated, care-free city — avid for pleasure, music and the dance; for this the Strausses supplied music inexhaustibly for nearly a hundred years. It lives on today in the hearts of all of us, young and old, as vividly as it did then.
