John was always respected as a consummate pianist, but he didn't make a solo, unaccompanied piano record until 1981's Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack. The wait was well worth it. His music had always been impressive, but this is the first time that his playing had been put on full display, and it reveals that there's even more depth and intricacies to his style than previously expected.
It's solid, front to back, top to bottom. I love boogie, blues and jazz piano, and this record has the goods. Right at the start, "Dorothy" makes me feel like I'm walking through the French Quarter on a humid spring evening. Mac's Boogie" gets things really rolling - Dr' John's playing is so smooth and fluid, this song sounds like it must be easy to play - but go try it for yourself. In my opinion, Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack shows Dr. John strengths in his solo playing. None of the songs have another instument besides the piano, and all of the tracks are classic New Orleans piano playing.
Mac Rebennack and James Booker have a lot in common: both were born in New Orleans within a year of each other; found work there as precocious rhythm & blues piano aces in the mid-Fifties; developed reputations as crack studio sidemen and streetwise eccentrics in the early Sixties; and have been carrying on the grand New Orleans piano tradition ever since. Though each was inspired by Professor Longhair and, later, by Huey Piano Smith, these two LPs pay homage, in varying degrees, to another influence - Ray Charles
And yet Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack lacks nothing. That Dr. John can say everything he needs to say on a piano tells you everything you need to know about the magnitude of his talent. This 1981 session brings the Doctor back to his early days, when he played keyboards as a studio musician in New Orleans and Los Angeles. What you have here is the sound of someone totally at ease with his instrument. Everything that people love about Dr. John’s music is present in these piano solos - his sincerity and his elegance, his sense of jazz and his feel for funk
