The pianist Alfred Brendel KBE (born 5 January 1931) was a recording artist for more than half a century, from his first record of Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 5 at the age of 21, to his farewell concerts in 2008, recorded in Hanover and Vienna. He has recorded with only three record companies: Vox Records, Decca and Philips. His discography contains many albums and compilations of multiple recordings from different composers featuring him as a pianist.

Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 23 in F minor, Op. 57 (colloquially known as the Appassionata, meaning "passionate" in Italian) is among the three famous piano sonatas of his middle period (the others being the Waldstein, Op. 53 and Les Adieux, Op. 81a); it was composed during 1804 and 1805, and perhaps 1806, and was dedicated to Count Franz von Brunswick.

Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5, Piano Sonatas Nos. 8 & 23. Philharmonia Orchestra. Edwin Fischer (October 6, 1886 – January 24, 1960) was a Swiss classical pianist and conductor. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, particularly in the traditional Germanic repertoire of such composers as Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert. He is also regarded as one of the finest piano pedagogues of modern times. Fischer was born in Basel and studied music first there, and later in Berlin at the Stern conservatory under Martin Krause.

His reading of the Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58, is a classic. Balanced in every detail, it never goes to dynamic extremes or puts undue emphasis on any gesture. The repeated-note figure that holds the first movement together is given very little momentum in its initial appearance, and it often seems to saunter along. But the reserve is deceptive, for the harmonic byways of the music are very sharply delineated.
