Booker Telleferro Ervin II (October 31, 1930 – August 31, 1970) was an American tenor saxophone player. His tenor playing was characterised by a strong, tough sound and blues/gospel phrasing.

The title of the album was explained by Kirk in the liner notes as follows: "Rip means Rip Van Winkle (or Rest in Peace?); it's the way people, even musicians are. They're asleep. The Trance (Booker Ervin, 1965).

The Trance is an album by American jazz saxophonist Booker Ervin featuring performances recorded in 1965 for the Prestige label, with Jaki Byard on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Alan Dawson on drums.
