The Jazz Composer's Orchestra is a 1968 album by the Jazz Composer's Orchestra recorded over a period of six months with Michael Mantler as composer, leader and producer. Many of the key figures in avant-garde jazz from the time contributed on the album including Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders, Gato Barbieri, Larry Coryell, Roswell Rudd, and Carla Bley. The album's finale features a two-part concerto for Cecil Taylor and orchestra.

Criss-Cross is Thelonious Monk's critically acclaimed second studio release for Columbia Records. The album consists of previously released Monk compositions that were re-recorded for Columbia by the Thelonious Monk Quartet. Criss-Cross was recorded during and shortly after the sessions for Monk's first Columbia LP, Monk's Dream.

Tori Freestone joined the National Youth Jazz Orchestra at 17 and went on to study jazz flute at Leeds College of Music, progressing to saxophone when she was 26. She's already recorded two critically acclaimed albums for Whirlwind, El Barranco (2016) and In The Chop House (2014). The mesmeric "Hermetica" opens this set with Freestone on flute and guest vocalist Brigitte Beraha singing with unfettered vivacity, delivering wordless vocals to the haunting melody played in harmony with Freestone's flute.
