The Queen of Hearts is a collaborative studio album by English musician Olivia Chaney and American band The Decemberists, under their project name Offa Rex. It was released in July 2017 under Nonesuch Records. The album was nominated for Best Folk Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards in 2018.
Comprising strictly traditional fare, the songs that make up Offa Rex's debut will be familiar to fans of the style, as many of their definitive versions have arrived via genre heavyweights like Anne Briggs, Martin Carthy, Shirley Collins, Ewan MacColl, Fairport Convention, and Steeleye Span. The latter two acts figure most prominently on the 11-track set, with the supremely talented Chaney channeling Sandy Denny and Maddy Prior, delivering pitch-perfect takes on seasoned tales both bucolic and brooding.

Offa Rex, themselves named for an Anglo-Saxon ruler in a Britain of warring kingdoms, have chosen the latter two of this triple nosegay. Darkness is only one element of their chiaroscuro - except inasmuch as these songs are inherently eerie. And all the more so in the present day, when we receive a folk music originally intended for the voice-in-person through a mediumship digital, electric and reproduced. As David Toop has it, recorded sound itself is a haunting. There’s another layer to this archeology of silt and sediment.

They were long-term lovers of folk-rock; Chaney was a well-known collaborator but relative newcomer (her 2015 debut album, The Longest River, nevertheless gained her support slots with Robert Plant and Shirley Collins). She has a magical voice, full of heft, soul and sunlight, reminiscent of Sandy Denny and Maddy Prior, while feeling refreshingly heartfelt and true.
