Roberto Fonseca (born 1975, Havana) is a Cuban jazz pianist. From an early age, Fonseca was surrounded by music: his father was drum player Roberto Fonseca, Sr, his mother, Mercedes Cortes Alfaro, a professional singer (she sings on her son's solo album, Zamazu), and his two older half-brothers from his mother's previous marriage to the pianist and musician Jesús "Chucho" Valdés are Emilio Valdés (drums) and Jesús "Chuchito" Valdés Jr. (piano).
Roberto Fonseca: Zamazu by AAJ Italy Staff, published on May 2, 2007.

Fans of the Buena Vista Social Club and their various solo artists such as the late Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo will probably have seen Roberto Fonseca at the piano on the numerous tours he has done with them. Onstage, he’s an intense and charismatic figure, scatting as he kneeds and pummels the keys in a muscular, percussive style that hints at his formative years as a drummer. Fresh from co-producing and playing on Ferrer’s posthumously released swan song Mi Sueño, Fonseca unleashes this confident jazz-roots solo album
But Roberto Fonseca could pull up a piano stool at a jazz club anywhere in the world and trounce the competition with his gift for melody, virtuosity, invention. 9 people found this helpful. An impressive album by Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca, who took over the piano chair in the Buena Vista Social Club after Ruben Gonzales left in '01. Fonseca draws on seemingly limitless styles and resources, and a soulful sense of melody that sets this album apart from many run-of-the-mill Latin jazz workouts: he plays with soul and sensitivity, exploring a rich emotional reservoir that will offer plenty of rewards to receptive listeners
Pianist Roberto Fonseca's Zamazu contains quite a bit of variety. From Afro-Cuban jazz and a piece that is closer to Indian music, to Omara Portunodo's passionate vocal on "Mil Congojas," originals that sound like tangos and sambas from the 1930s, and orchestral numbers, there is much to savor throughout this continually colorful set. Fonseca can play with great intensity (sometimes hinting at McCoy Tyner) but is at his best caressing lyrical and melodies.
Roberto Fonseca, Zamazu. Enja/Montuno Records). He may be best known for his work with different members of the Buena Vista Social Club, especially the late Ibrahim Ferrer, but Fonseca now gets a chance to show what else he can do. There's an inevitable reminder of his skill as an accompanist, with his delicate backing for Omara Portuondo on Mil Congojas, a song popularised by Ferrer, and there's a charming, drifting ballad that he co-wrote with Ferrer.
